For School Librarians

Make your library the place kids run to.

When a character lives in your library and kids come back to see what it did, reading becomes something they love — not something they're assigned.

The heart of it — the loop that lives in your library
1

Color or read with it

A child colors a Doodle or reads with it, making it their own.

2

They leave

They head back to class or on with their day.

3

It moves, leaves a note

While they're gone it changes — it moves, leaves a note, goes on an adventure.

4

They come back to see

And a new challenge is waiting, which sends them off again.

Why it's good for your library

Nothing builds a reader like wanting to come back. Reading to a character who's always happy to listen, or doing a challenge to "unlock" its next adventure, makes kids want to read — and kids who want to read, read more, which lifts everything else along with it.

Easier than you'd think

Start with a single character in the library and grow from there. There are no points to track and no quizzes to manage — the character is the whole draw. And teachers love joining in, so working together is the easiest yes you'll ever get.

Worth saying plainly: this is one of the most fun, research-based programs a library can run.

Telling and acting out stories with a character drives oral language and early literacy (a landmark preschool finding), and the American Library Association names drawing and coloring as protected library art forms libraries are meant to support.
